40%. This is how many products we throw away due to improper storage. It would seem, what's so difficult? But it turns out that much of the usual turned out to be wrong. As a result, we just throw away almost half of what we bought. We will tell you how to organize their storage so that you do not have to spend extra money.

Apples

Yes, it is much more convenient to store them in the drawers at the bottom of the refrigerator, but this method is not suitable for apples. But they give off ethylene gas, which helps other fruits ripen in the refrigerator. Therefore, it is recommended to store them separately in a paper bag (or a regular bag with small holes).

But on the other hand, this property of apples will help other fruits ripen, if there is such a need.

Tomatoes

Many people believe that tomatoes will stay fresher for a long time if stored in the refrigerator. However, experts say that low temperatures only harm these vegetables, changing their taste. We recommend storing them at room temperature and no more than a week.

By the way, tomatoes are not the only ones that should not be stored in the refrigerator: this applies to citrus fruits, potatoes, sweet potatoes, as well as garlic and onions.

Eggs

Many of us store our eggs at room temperature. However, experts from the Food and Drug Administration from America recommend storing them only in the refrigerator. This will reduce the likelihood of contracting salmonellosis.

Therefore, you should not buy those eggs that are stored on non-refrigerated store shelves.

In addition, few people know, but eggs can be frozen: for this they are broken, poured into a container, whipped until smooth. In this form, the shelf life can be extended to six months.

Coffee

Many people sincerely believe that coffee lasts almost forever. But if you only drink a couple of cups a week, you should not buy this product in kilograms. The taste of the coffee beans lasts only a few months after opening the package. The same applies to freshly ground coffee: it oxidizes rather quickly, so it is better not to stock up on it for future use.

In addition, you need to protect the product from exposure to sunlight and excess contact with air. After opening the package, it is better to pour the product into a resealable container.

And most importantly, do not need to be stored in the refrigerator: air humidity and exposure to other aromas will not lead to anything good.

Nuts

Surprisingly, nuts aren't always worth keeping at room temperature either. For example, walnuts and almonds retain their beneficial properties and taste at room temperature for 2-3 weeks. If you do not plan on consuming them so quickly, simply put them in the refrigerator - in this case, the shelf life will be almost 9 months.

Or you can simply freeze the nuts: they will retain their beneficial properties for up to two years.

Bread

It is believed that keeping bread in the refrigerator will prolong its freshness and flavor for a longer period. But this is a mistake: low temperatures accelerate the crystallization of starch, as a result, the bread, on the contrary, becomes stale faster. It is best to store it in a paper bag out of the sun.

Spices

Contrary to the misconception, spices don't last forever - they also have their own shelf life. Yes, you will not get poisoned, but their aroma and taste will be lost. The shelf life is on average 3-4 months.

To extend the shelf life, you should use the following tips:

  • after opening the package, pour it into glass or tin containers with a tight lid;
  • store in a dry and dark cabinet.

For example, many people have jars of spices next to the stove. But this is a mistake - excessive temperature leads to a loss of taste.

Cucumbers and avocados

Very few people know how to store them correctly (this also includes eggplants). The optimum temperature for such vegetables and fruits is about +10 degrees. Therefore, room temperature is not suitable for them, but you should also not put them in the refrigerator - they will retain their properties and appearance for just a couple of days.

Therefore, either store them on the balcony, or in the refrigerator, using in the specified time frame.
