Admit it, who, just like me, reading Peter the Great, wondered - what kind of mysterious beast is this, wood oil?
I will remind you of a passage (although I partially censor it, because some words can be used in books, but in Zen it is not!)
Aleksashka this time, after the evening, was torn out without mercy - he barely crawled into the basement. He took cover, was silent, crunched his teeth. Alyoshka brought him porridge with milk on the stove. I felt very sorry for him: "Oh, how are you, hovering ..."
For a day Aleksashka lay in a hot place near the chimney, and - he walked away, began to talk:
- Break such a father on a wheel, a predatory asp... You, Alyoshka, take the wooden oil on the sly for the images, I will anoint you, by morning it will dry up, then we will leave... I will not return home, even if I die in a ditch.
They don’t shake oil from wood (here and in childhood it’s understandable!). But I didn’t see footnotes explaining what kind of oil this was, and then I somehow forgot it (or rather, I saw the phrase a couple of times, both of these times related to stories about painting and paints). Then, at the subconscious level, I concluded that wood oil is something like drying oil (don't judge strictly, I was a child).
Much later, I saw in excerpts from the memoirs of the peasant life-being that many "porridge with wooden oil was for joy, but the cow has never been seen."
Then I decided to look - what kind of wood oil is this? What kind of raw material was it obtained from?
And it turned out that wood oil is... olive oil.
But what kind of olive is another question. Because initially all olive oil could be called “wooden” - after all, it is squeezed out of the fruit of a tree, therefore it is “wooden”.
But also the olive oil of the lowest quality was called wood oil - the one that cannot be eaten because of its disgusting taste and smell.
According to the current classification, it will most likely be Lampante Olive Oil - from which refined olive oil is already made, cleaning it from impurities by chemical means and removing unnecessary taste and aroma.
But earlier, such oil was used for icon lamps and lamps.
Such is it, wood oil, during the production of which not a single Pinocchio was harmed ...
