Choosing good wine in a store is not easy. And if in specialized boutiques you can always turn to a consultant for help, in an ordinary supermarket the buyer will have to choose on his own. Many people buy expensive drinks because they are sure of their quality. But this is a myth - not always what is expensive will be of high quality.

To choose the right wine, check out our recommendations to help you find a good quality drink.

No tinsel

You shouldn't buy wine, bottles of which are decorated with beads, flowers and other accessories. Most often, not the best content is hidden behind a beautiful "facade". But one should not conclude that the strict appearance of the bottle is a sign of quality.

Always read the label where everything you need to know about wine is written.

Cork is not the main thing

Many people mistakenly believe that the cork is the “quality mark” of good wine. However, this is not quite true.

Yes, since the manufacture of such caps is not a cheap pleasure, they are necessarily used to close premium drinks. But some wines, for example, those without potential (those that are not designed for long-term aging), do not need such a blockage. Therefore, you can safely buy bottles with screw caps - winemakers in many countries of the New World have long switched to them.

Grape sort

The quality wine label indicates the grape variety from which the drink is made. But if there is an inscription "From quality red varieties", it is better to put the bottle aside. Most likely, such a wine is made from ordinary fruit leftovers.

The only exception is France.

According to local laws, winemakers of this country may not indicate the variety, since the quality of the product is controlled according to regional principles.

When buying French wine, it is better to choose drinks produced in Bordeaux, Rhone Valley.

Production and bottling area

When buying wine, you should choose those where, in addition to the production area, "Single vineyard" is indicated. This means that the grapes were harvested in a separate, often small, vineyard. Usually, a drink made from berries will be better and of better quality: grapes are harvested faster in small areas, the berries themselves are more uniform, which has a positive effect on quality.

Please also apply to the place of bottling: it is better if it coincides with the place of collection of berries. Otherwise, the risk of buying a drink with not the highest taste properties increases.

the date of bottling

When choosing a wine, pay attention to the bottling date. And it is worth remembering that this is not the same as the crop year indicated on the drink label.

It can take many years from the moment of wine production to its arrival on store shelves; some bottles are stored for a long time in the warehouse.

Therefore, when buying a bottle, pay attention directly to the date of bottling.

And here you immediately come across a stereotype that the older wine is better.

On the contrary, you should be on your guard - if you buy young wine, and more than 3-4 years have passed since the date of bottling, then something is clearly wrong with the drink. Often, "advanced" age indicates its poor quality.

Wine strength

This is a fairly important indicator that is worth paying attention to, since the taste of the wine depends on it. You need to focus on the following - the fewer degrees in the drink, the lighter it is. True, light drinks usually do not have such a pronounced taste, there is a noticeable sourness. But strong wines are characterized by a pronounced taste, but quickly get drunk.

Which one should you choose - dry or semi-sweet?

It would be a mistake to say that all semi-sweet wines are of low quality, but for beginners who are just discovering the world of wine, it is still recommended to start with dry or semi-dry wines.

But most semi-sweet drinks contain a lot of sugar - it helps to hide the inaccuracies in taste and aroma. Preservatives and stabilizers in the composition have no better effect on their quality.

Is cost an important indicator?

As we have already noted, the price of a drink is not the most important indicator, especially when it comes to Europe.

The fact is that well-known wine producers often overestimate the cost of their product thanks to the famous "Name", but wines of less popular producers with a similar quality can cost an order of magnitude cheaper.

Advice - do not be afraid, experiment and buy drinks from brands you previously unknown.
