GMOs are a hot topic not only in the United States, but also in many countries. Today in Europe they are beginning to abandon a number of American products due to GMOs in their composition. However, even we, in Russia, often eat such products and do not even understand that this is so.
In fact, a GMO is an organism that has been changed at the DKN level by introducing another organism into it. This is usually necessary to make crops more resistant to pests, diseases, pesticides. And today, many products contain them in their composition, and we use them without even knowing it.
TOP 10 GMO foods that may be in your diet
Honey
It is hard to imagine that honey can also be genetically modified, because it is produced by bees. However, for this they need pollen and they collect it indiscriminately, including from plants that could be GMO.
As a result, it is becoming increasingly difficult for farmers producing this product to ensure that it does not contain any substances.
Soy
Some health conscious people who stop eating meat use soy. But in America, 93% of those sold contain GMOs, which has become necessary to create a herbicide-resistant product.
However, many believe that in principle they do not use soy, but this is not at all the case, because chips are made on its basis, soy is present in bread, sauces, beer, spices.
Considering that only 7% of soybeans that are grown in the USA are non-GMO, the chances are very low that you are not consuming genetically modified foods.
Sugar
Most sugar in America today is made from beets or cane that have undergone genetic modification.
In 2010, the Ministry of Agriculture stopped regulating the cultivation of sugar beet, as a result, a variety appeared on the market that is completely resistant to herbicides. As of 2012, more than 90% of the total crop of this root vegetable contained GMOs.
Cotton
Do you think you are not eating it? Well, cotton is also used in the food industry, and 90% of the goods supplied from America are GMOs. It is especially abundant in cottonseed oil, which has been used for over 100 years. It is added to salads, cereals, chips, snacks are made on the basis of cottonseed oil, and it is also used in the production of some cosmetics.
Canola
This rapeseed oil is widely used in restaurant practice. 90% of all products supplied from the United States have been genetically modified.
This product is a component of many dishes: peanut butter, frozen potatoes, citrus juices, chocolate drinks, margarine, popcorn. So if you think you don't eat GMOs, you are usually wrong.
Potatoes
In 2014, the US Department of Agriculture selected a genetically modified potato variety with the main goal of reducing the amount of the carcinogen acrylamide, which is formed during frying and makes the product very dangerous.
In addition, the resulting variety proved to be resistant to mechanical damage, which makes it more profitable for cultivation.
Today this variety is used in the production of French fries and chips.
Papaya
In the case of this fruit, the use of GMOs allowed the culture to be saved from complete extinction, since in the middle of the last century, the papaya was "attacked" by a dangerous ring spot virus.
Therefore, in 95% of cases, the papaya, which is grown today in Hawaii, contains "alien organisms."
Yeast
Most non-baking people care little about yeast use. But the fact is that this component is used in the production of wines. Therefore, buying wine that is produced in America or Canada, you are already becoming a GMO consumer. True, in this case, it benefits not the producers, but the consumers, since it helps to relieve the headache that often occurs after drinking such a drink.
Tobacco
Smoking is generally not good for your health. But nevertheless it is America's main commodity crop. And 90% of the tobacco in the US is GMO.
This is due to the fact that this crop is often attacked by dangerous pests. And for many years, breeders have worked with scientists to develop varieties that would be resistant to them. Therefore, when buying tobacco made in America, it is very easy to start using a genetically modified product.
Dairy
Here the story is a little different. In 2011, American scientists were able to slightly "change" cows so that they produce milk that is not dangerous for children. The fact is that today very many have such a problem as milk protein intolerance, due to why adults and children cannot use dairy products, and after all, children are made on their basis mixtures.
In addition, it is not uncommon for manufacturers to use growth hormones to get more milk. It's not very helpful either.
