A famous dish today gathers around itself a lot of controversy about how it is correctly called - shawarma or shawarma. In Russia, both of these names are used, and many do not think at all about how to call it correctly - they just love the familiar taste. But some are really perplexed about how it will be true. In our article we will try to figure out why there are such differences.

What is the difference between shawarma and shawarma?

Shawarma is a word of Arabic origin. Translated into our language, it means “grilled meat». The direct name of shawarma is often used in Moscow, but residents of St. Petersburg stubbornly say shawarma. And, by the way, the farther from the capital in the northern direction, the more often you can find the word "Shaverma" on the signboards of shops.

So what's right?

In fact, these two words are different names for the same dish, the only difference in pronunciation and spelling, in different dialects.

The dishes do not differ in the composition of preparation. True, some cooks use thin lavash (Armenian), while others insist that all the ingredients should be wrapped in pita bread.

Separately, it should be noted that St. Petersburg shawarma is made from lamb and chicken, then wrapped in pita. This recipe is more traditional because it does not contain pork, which Muslims, where the shawarma came from, are considered "dirty" meat.

Where did the name Shawarma come from?

In modern Russian dictionaries, you can find only one name - and this is shawarma, although shawarma is easier to pronounce and phonetically more convenient word. Most likely, this name is a dialectical version, which was used erroneously at first.

And according to some experts, shawarma will also soon be included in dictionaries and, perhaps, it will even be made the main word, because it meets all modern standards. And this, by the way, distinguishes it from shawarma, where two consonant letters go in a row at once.

By the way, between these two names once there were such passions and such opposition that some residents The "cultural capital" was offered to ban the use of the word "shawarma" at the legislative level within the St. Petersburg. It seems to us that an ordinary word does not deserve such passions at all.

Where is it tastier?

According to fans of this product, it is best prepared in St. Petersburg. This is also due to the fact that chicken with lamb is softer in taste, unlike pork. And the general cooking culture affects the quality.

In the capital of Russia, there are a lot of restaurants that are owned by large advertised monopolists. And, to be honest, they do not monitor the quality and behavior of the staff as much as in small St. Petersburg cafes, where they honestly try to monitor their reputation.

And in small private establishments they are very careful to please their guests, they try to select professional chefs and be sure to train them. After all, even if you use the freshest products, a variety of sauces, in the absence of experience and knowledge, you can make a dish that will be dry and tasteless.

What is it called in different countries of the world?
