Fiction is not only full of descriptions of various events or stories. In it, the heroes live, suffer, love, fight and... are eating.

Herring and Adventure Salad by Fanfan and Captain Rip Head

Surely there is not a single book where something from food or drink would not be mentioned at least once.

Recently I remembered a wonderful French writer, whose books many had read in childhood - Louis Henri Boussinard.

And then one of his books comes to mind - "Captain Rip the Head". The same one in which the young rich man set off from Paris with a detachment of "suckers" (as they themselves called), consisting of the same boys, to help the Boer armed formations in the South Africa.

Oddly enough, at home this book did not make a special impression on the reader and was soon forgotten.

But for millions of Soviet teenagers, that novel became a cult. We enthusiastically read the dashing adventures of the Boer scout, Jean Grandier, nicknamed "Captain Tear-off," and his cheerful friend Fanfan.

How is this book and the cooking channel related?

On the pages of that novel, there is a salad with herring, which is prepared according to the principle "what God sent."

Quote from Captain Rip Head, Louis Henri Boussinard:

Rip off the head and Fanfan entered the shop, behind which was a kind of tavern, and demanded breakfast. They were served eggs, two smoked herrings, onions, ranet apples, a bottle of ale, and a loaf of stale bread.
The starving Fanfan forgot all the worries and horrors of the war and, widening his nostrils, eagerly inhaled the smell of food, like a fairytale cannibal, smelling somewhere a human spirit.
“Smoked herring, like the lizard, is a friend of man,” he said thoughtfully.
Fanfan cut the herrings in length, separated the heads, put them on a dish, then peeled and finely chopped the onions, peeled off the apples, cut them into slices, mixed everything and, abundantly pouring oil and vinegar on this mishmash, began to absorb his unimaginable food.

This is it, the very salad that we will cook today. But a little differently.

Ingredients:

fillet of slightly salted herring (preferably smoked)
sweet and sour apple
onion
2 tbsp. l. sour cream
2 h l. French mustard (grains)
lemon juice

How to cook:

1. All ingredients must be cut into equal pieces, cubes or strips.

2. Sprinkle the salad with lemon juice, season with sour cream and mustard. Mix.

Everything! Fanfan's salad is ready!
