Yes, yes, I once wrote that the food there was delicious, but sometimes I found something for the cook, or for another responsible face, and as a result for breakfast we received semolina porridge, cocoa (or surrogate coffee with milk) and... a sandwich with butter and a piece herring.
I still remember this set and my bewilderment: how is it, porridge is sweet, herring is salty, and in general, every child knew an old rhyme:
If you want forget-me-nots to settle in your stomach
Eat herring with milk!
No, all individually did not raise any questions. With age, I learned to twirl my nose, they say, there is fish and herring tastes better! And then the herring left in years. And they cooked delicious porridge in our garden. And the cocoa was fragrant (but I didn't like acorn coffee).
And already in adulthood, I had to deal with combinations that were not at all typical for our culinary culture.
True, many of them turned out to be very wonderful - in proper performance.
I remember that during the student days one friend (he lived in a hostel) persistently tried to treat all of us to beans with sugar. We rejected as best we could, fought back with our hands and feet, and he argued - delicious.
Much later, at some small anime festival, I tasted steamed red bean buns (sweet stuffing!). They belonged to the universe of Hayao Miyazake, the anime "Spirited Away", sort of.
And it turned out to be a real delight!
He was also suspicious of fish okroshka with shrimp - and it turned out to be tastes.
But here is the beetroot seasoned with milk mixed with beet broth, I could not taste it - one view caused overwhelming disgust (coupled with the knowledge of how it was done - the sensations were non-transferable).

Ps. A colleague shared "food horror" - for her, biscuit cakes with all kinds of impregnations are disgusting. One view inspires the idea that someone ate this dish, but did not take root ...
