What the most popular Spanish dessert looks like, how much it costs and how it is prepared.
Recently, my friend Masha Tamgina, who lives in Spain, announced that she was going to Russia. And she asked if I needed to bring something. “Bring me some local sweets,” I asked. And Masha said: "I'll bring you some turrons."
Turron is a dessert that is the hallmark of Spain. But not everyone knows what it is. Let me tell you more.
Classic turron
Turron is a kind of nougat we are used to. Only if the nougat is soft and stringy, then the turron is hard. The classic turron is made with just 4 ingredients - honey, sugar, egg white and almonds.
It is quite difficult to explain what turron is to those who have never tried it. Perhaps it will be clearer if I tell you how it is prepared.
How is it cooked
The cooking process is fairly straightforward but requires attention to detail. The honey with sugar is heated to a certain temperature, then added to the whipped whites and mixed.
The mass is beaten for a while, and then boiled over the fire. Then spread over the surface with a layer of about 1.5-2 cm. After cooling, the mass solidifies and turns into a “stone”. I completely forgot about almonds, they add it before "plating".
This is what a classic turron from the Spanish confectionery Vicens looks like. The bottom and edges of the turron are covered with a thin layer of chocolate. This is a departure from the classics, but not strong.
Today in Spain you can find a wide variety of turrons. They began to cook not only with almonds, but also with other nuts. Many pastry shops have gone further and started making desserts in a similar form factor. This is what Masha brought me, in addition to the Turrons.
Dessert Crema Cremada, tastes very similar to Bavarian cream
Dessert Iogurt i Festucs, strongly resemble halva, only very, very tender
Dessert Lunar Tread Nougat is more chocolate than turron. But it's incredibly delicious
How much are
All desserts, with the exception of "chocolate", cost only 2.6 euros. In our country, the rate is constantly jumping, so I will not translate it into rubles. I believe that the cost of these desserts is quite justified.
Where to try and buy in Russia
Unfortunately, in our country I have not met any establishments that specialize in the production of turrons. But you can buy in large supermarkets such as Auchan or Metro. If you don't have such supermarkets nearby, you can always order online. Average price for Yandex. Market 150-170 rubles per 100 gram tile.
In the end, I would like to say that the turron is an excellent edible souvenir that can be brought back from a vacation in Spain. I hope the quarantine will end soon and it will be possible to travel freely.
