How obesity and overweight affect life expectancy, how to calculate body mass index

Admin

Hi friends! Since I cook food, I am haunted by the topic of health, so I continue to read the journals of foreign doctors on topics that affect half of humanity. Recently, the topic of overweight has surfaced, what is obesity and how it is dangerous to health.

Obesity is a deviation from the normal weight due to an increase in body weight or its fatty part.

If body weight exceeds a certain level, the risk of contracting certain diseases increases. In addition, life expectancy and quality of life decrease with increasing body weight. Body mass index (BMI) shows the ideal weight for a person's height.

Body mass index

Calculation of Body Mass Index = (body weight: heightยฒ)

It is calculated by dividing kilograms of body weight by the square of your height. BMI best matches body fat mass as measured by direct measurement. For this reason, BMI is particularly well suited for assessing the risk of diseases associated with being overweight.

BMI> 25 - overweight

BMI 30-34.5 - obesity I degree

BMI 35-39.5 - obesity II degree

BMI> 40 - grade III obesity

Causes of excess weight

With regard to the reason, there are primary and secondary obesity.

Primary obesity is associated with genetic causes, overeating and malnutrition, a person's lifestyle, and psychological factors such as stress, frustration, and loneliness.

Secondary obesity includes endocrinological diseases (diseases of the hormonal system), brain tumors, or drug-related illnesses, such as after taking antidepressants, hormonal products, beta-blockers or lithium.

The main problem of obesity is imbalance between energy consumption and energy expenditure. If, for example, someone has a genetic predisposition to obesity, it is caused by overeating and too little exercise.

What diseases can overweight cause?

Decreased performance and shortness of breath, increased tendency to sweating, psychological disorders, mechanical overstrain of the joints and the spine come to the fore.

Secondary diseases caused by obesity can be:

  1. Heart diseases
  2. Vascular diseases
  3. Hypertension
  4. Diabetes
  5. Osteoarthritis

It can also be associated with an increased risk of cancer, gallstones, elevated uric acid levels, and social consequences such as reactive depression.
