To make a melon sweet and fragrant, you need to be able to choose it. Advice shared by melon workers and melon sellers will help you not to stumble upon "rubber" and "soap".

Juicy, sweet and so aromatic... melon. So how do you choose the right one?

Secret number 1 - appearance and aroma

A good melon should be intact, without spots, dents, damage or cracks. That is, the more beautiful the fruit, the better. An ideal melon always looks great, neat, and hands reach for it.

The aroma of ripe melon is subtle, gives off pineapple, vanilla and even a little honey or pear. It is not for nothing that melon is called honey in the eastern bazaars.

Important! Ripe melon should not smell like grass and greens.

Secret number 2 - skin

A ripe melon of a "collective farmer" has a smooth skin, while a "torpedo" will have a rough, but furrowed skin.

When choosing, lightly scrape the skin with your fingernail or a coin. A ripe fruit can do this without difficulty, but an unripe melon will remain a little smooth and even glossy.

Secret number 3 - knock and sound

Out of habit and someone's strange advice, it is customary for us to choose a melon by sound.

This is not a myth and one of the indicators of ripeness is indeed the sound when tapping, but you should not rely on it alone.

Important! Do not bang hard on the melon. When buying, just slap the fruit with your open palm.
When struck with a hand, a dull sound will be heard. This means that the fruit is ripe, but if the sound is ringing - no.

Secret number 4 - tail or stalk

Pay attention to both ends of the melon. In a mature melon, the stalk is dry, and the attachment on the other side (where the flower was), on the contrary, will be soft.

If, when pressed, the place of the flower is pressed inward, the fruit is hopelessly overripe, and if it is too hard, the melon is not yet ripe.

The net on the peel is dry with a straw tint in a ripe melon, when the drawing is green, it is better to put off such a melon.

Important! The color and direction of the stripes or veins do not affect the taste of the melon.

Secret # 5 - whole is better than half

Sometimes melons are especially large, and what about such huge ones? Why do we need a melon for 10-15 kilograms?

Vendors have found a way out and often cut the fruit, and then offer halves and even pieces of sweet juicy melon. Everything is at the request of the buyer.

Important! Never take cut fruits from the market or outside, because due to the high sugar content in summer, bacteria grow very quickly in the open melon pulp.
It's definitely not worth feasting on such a melon.

And finally, a few tips:

if the melon is not eaten immediately, then it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two days
to store half a melon, the seeds must be left inside the fruit
melon pieces / cubes can be frozen and used in winter for desserts or baked goods
melons are always tastier in the market than in the supermarket
ripe melon springs a little when pressed from the sides, it should not be hard and ring like a watermelon
