The other day I asked my husband to buy salt. After work, he went to the supermarket, which is located next to the house, bought food, including salt. I took this salt:
He brought the purchases home, we laid them out and did not notice anything unusual. The next day, I took a jar of salt when I was preparing dinner. And I saw that the shelf life of salt is only two years.
To be honest, it was amazing for me, I always thought that salt has no expiration date. And here are the expiration dates on the packaging:
The first date was printed poorly, it is almost invisible in the photo, so I will duplicate it with text:
24.10.17
23.10.19
That is, the salt expired on October 23, 2019, but it is still sold in the store.
I would like to note that the taste, smell and texture of salt is no different from the "unexpired" salt.
And yesterday my husband bought, at my request, another salt, which I used for salting fish. And here the shelf life is already unlimited:
The packaging says:
The shelf life is not limited if the storage conditions are observed.
I am not a chemist, but I believe that the whole point is exactly what kind of salt it is. In the first case, the "extra" salt, boiled, therefore has a shelf life. In the second case, it is ordinary, from rock salt, which was formed thousands of years ago, therefore it does not have an expiration date. By the way, iodized salt also has a shelf life of 2 years.
Do you think you can use expired salt in food? Or is it better not to risk it? I am still inclined to believe that it is possible.
