Cash turnover in stores is estimated at millions of rubles daily. Naturally, any businessman does not want to lose a ruble. Therefore, the delay and the subsequent write-off of products is a rather painful "financial" blow.
If the product has already arrived late, there are no problems here - it is enough to make one call to the supplier and the product will be taken away, as a result the store owner does not lose anything.
But what do you do with goods that are stale on the shelves? Most often, the seller is "to blame" for this, from whose salary the costs incurred are deducted.
But there are other methods for solving this problem, for example, re-processing spoiled products, which we then eat.
Dispose of
Most often, spoiled foods and foods with an expired shelf life are thrown away. And this process is especially well established in large supermarkets, which care more about their reputation than about the dubious profit they can get.
In such stores, there is usually a special employee who is responsible for the goods, looks at the delay and sends it for recycling. True, the bins where garbage is thrown out are often freely available.
For this reason, near them you can often find people with little income, who are trying to find something edible there.
By the way, in many European countries at the legislative level it is forbidden to throw away such products - they are given to poor people.
Send back to suppliers
If the expiration date expires after a couple of days, then stores can send it back to suppliers.
It is understood that if for some reason the product did not find its buyer (low quality, lack of advertising, overpriced), the manufacturers themselves are also to blame.
Moreover, most suppliers do not refuse to accept goods back, especially when working with large buyers - in case of refusal, cooperation may be terminated.
True, this is allowed only if the shopping facility received products directly from the supplier (manufacturer). If the goods are first delivered to the distribution center and then to the store, the fault lies with the store.
Used in their own cooking
Alas, this is not uncommon. True, as the sellers and administrators themselves say, the initiative usually comes from them - the leadership large retail chains would not do this, fearing for their reputation (although in small stores it is possible all).
And this is due to the fact that the costs for expired goods are borne by the sellers - so they try to avoid this by all methods, including such “dirty” ones. Yes, absolutely bad and long-spoiled products do not go into cooking - rotten vegetables or strong-smelling meat will most likely be thrown away (but even here this cannot be 100% asserted).
But the products (meat, milk, frozen goods) are most often processed. Salads, desserts, main courses are prepared from them. Moreover, ordinary customers, especially if they rarely look into the culinary department, are unlikely to distinguish a fresh piece of cheese from a steamed one, especially since it is part of another product.
Tip: try to buy food in cooking only as a last resort - perhaps the salad displayed in the display case is made from foods that are no longer fit for human consumption.
Sell at a discount to employees
Alas, despite all the cynicism, store staff often rejoice at this, since the salaries of guards and sellers are already small. Therefore, they buy products at discounts and promotions, especially since many of them can be safely consumed for several days after the expiration date.
And it's good if the administration of the store offers goods at discounts. In practice, there are cases when stores force their employees to buy delayed payments, threatening them with fines.
It all depends on the leadership.
Left on the shelves
Alas, it also happens. True, most often this happens by accident, especially if the store does not have enough staff.
But many buyers do not even look at the shelf life, buy and even consume such products. And this is a great way for a store to avoid unnecessary expenses. If a customer notices such a product in a store, sellers can simply apologize and remove the product from the shelves.
And if not? This is great: there is no delay, and there is no need to pay for it out of pocket.
Therefore, it is so important when buying food products, be sure to check the dates on the packaging.
