The answer is unequivocal - it is necessary. Rice is not washed only if risotto is being prepared. In all other cases, this procedure is required. If you skip it, the dish will not turn out tasty, and the consistency of the porridge will be viscous, more like mashed potatoes.

Why should the rice be washed?

As we said, this procedure is required. Firstly, it will get rid of dirt and dust that could appear during storage and transportation of cereals, small dark grains. Secondly, some manufacturers use talcum powder, treating cereals with it in the fight against insects. It also needs to be washed off.

But the main reason why you can't do without rinsing is rice flour. During processing, the cereals are ground several times in special equipment, after which this flour is formed on the grains.

If you cook rice without rinsing, the grains will simply stick together, as a result you will not get a tasty crumbly porridge, but an incomprehensible mess.

Even if you bought steamed cereals, they are also necessarily washed. What is it for, especially since the grains have already been steamed? This is due to the very talc with which the product is treated to kill insects. It is a carcinogen and must be washed off.

A very important aspect is water. Tap water is definitely not suitable for this, because it often contains bleach, metals, and other impurities in the composition. Using such water, you simply spoil the taste of the porridge. Better to take bottled.

The second mistake is using cold water. Yes, it should be warm, but not boiling water - a temperature of about +60 C. is enough. If it is hot, flour that is not on the surface of the grains will curdle, which will also negatively affect the taste of the dish.

  • Use a colander to rinse.
  • Pour cereals, pour water (take it in a ratio of 4 to 1)
  • Stir with a light motion of your hand.

It's easy to understand: the water will be clean, without cloudy deposits. Some cooks advise leaving the washed rice for at least another hour so that it dries out - this will ensure a friable dish.

To make the dish tasty and correct in structure, remember that it is important to take into account the type of cereal. For example, when cooking basmati, it needs to be rinsed about 3 times, just like long grain rice. Plain cereals, as well as rice, which is used in the preparation of rolls - 5-7 times.

When making risotto or pudding, the rice is either not rinsed or at most twice. Otherwise, the rice flour will be washed out, as a result, it will not be possible to achieve the desired grain consistency. Round and short grains, from which porridge or filling for pies are prepared, must be washed, lightly rubbing the grains with your fingers, then leave for 15 minutes in warm water and rinse again.

Do I need to rinse after cooking

If you did everything according to the rules, then you do not need to rinse the rice in the future. But if you cooked the rice, and it turned out not crumbly, as you wanted, it is better to rinse the cereals.

Everything is simple here: transfer the finished product to a sieve, rinse once with clean water. It should be at room temperature to keep the rice warm. It remains to add a little butter, wait a couple of minutes until it soaks the grains and you can serve the porridge to the table.
